Located
on the north west corner of Vietnam is the small village of Dien Bien
Phu. Set amidst a beautiful valley near the Laotian border, this
particular area bears special significance to the present State of
Vietnam. This was the location of one of the battles fought between the
Vietnamese and the French where the Vietnamese forces, who were then
called the Viet Minch, won a decisive battle and destroyed the local
French garrison in May of 1954. Today, there is an interesting museum
where information and details about that battle may be browsed.
The area is also home to some of Vietnam’s hill-tribe people, most
notably the Tai and Hmong. A journey to this remote region provides
visitors with views of picturesque mountain terrain and glimpses of
ethnic villages living a lifestyle that has remained unchanged for
centuries.
This
place is a must-see sight for every French visitor who is interested in
history. The victory of the Vietnamese against the French foreign army
proved to be a turning point in the war and was the trigger for the
French to move out of Vietnam. During the tourist season you can easily
get a flight from Hanoi to this historic place. Some travelers opt to
arrive by motorbikes that can readily be hired in the capital.
Dien Bien Phu may also be used as a stop over on the way to Sapa.
