Given the very mountainous terrain of North Korea’s interior, the
country abounds with breath taking sites for the nature lover. While
North Korea has very strict rules about tourists going about unescorted,
special guided tours are at times available as the North has
increasingly tolerated the arrival of tourists in the recent years.
Some of the mountains known for their impressive views are:
Mt. Paektusan
Set
on the border between North Korea and China, Mt. Paektusan is home to
the largest crater lake (caldera,) Lake Chonji, in the world which was
formed during the more active days of the now dormant volcano. Composed
of more than 20 towering peaks, Mt. Paektusan is also surrounded by
chains of smaller mountains. The mountain forests are lush and dense
creating a perfect environment for a diverse plant and animal life.
Mt. Kumgangsan
Stretching
across 3 counties in the Kangwondo province, Mt. Kumgangsan can best be
described as a “rocky” mountain with different forms of granite,
including biotite, covering the mountain face.
There are two sides to the mountain with the Chunungsun watershed
running in the middle. The East Side is called Oegumkang, while the West
Side is Naegumgang.
Towering rock columns, deep lakes and lots of waterfalls are just a few
of the factors that are largely responsible for the mountain’s majestic
scenery
Mt. Myohyangsan
Rising
to a height of 1909m, Mt. Myohyangsan sits at the borders of the
Provinces of Pyonganbukdo and Pyongannamdo.
Because the forest surrounding the mountain has so many fragrant trees,
the mountain was named Myohyang, which means “unique fragrance.”
The wondrous beauty of the peaks make the mountain one of the most
famous in the Korean peninsula.
Mt. Myohyangsan is also home to the Buddhist religion and there are
still a number of Buddhist remains. One such is the Bohyunsa temple,
which holds many other historical remains from the Koyro dynasty.
Mt. Chilbosan
Mt.
Chilbosan sits in Myunchungun County at the coast of the East Sea in
Hamkyoungbukto province. The mountain rises to 659 meters.
Apart from the imposing scenery of the mountain, the crystal clear
waters of the East Sea contributes to the breathtaking view.
Musudan, located south of Mt. Chilbo, is a famous cliff 71 meters above
the sea. Go up north for some 20 kilometers to find an area called
Haechilbo. It is said that the cliffs, island of rocks and the blue sea
of Haechilbo resemble man-made sculptures in an art gallery.
Mt. Kuwolsan
Mt.
Kuwolsan is located in the Hwanghae-do province. Resting in the western
plain of Hwanghaenam-do province, the mountain which rises up to 954
meters displays a uniquely majestic beauty. Mt. Kuwolsan is famous for
its lovely scenery and breathtaking valleys.
Mt. Kuwolsan is also well known for holding numerous historic and
cultural objects. Among them are Tankundae, a testimony of the Tangun
myth, Sansungtuh of the Kokuro dynasty, a kiln for Koyro porcelains, and
old temples such as Paeyopsa and Woljongsa.
